Heads Up 9 December 2022

HEADS UP

Dear Colleagues,

It's always good to celebrate what is taking place in Warwickshire and a recent publication from the Department for Education (DfE) has shown that, once again, Warwickshire is one of the most successful Counties in the country for ensuring its 16 and 17 year old residents are either in education, employment or training. You can find out more through this link and thanks to all who have contributed to this.

Schools Bill

I think you will have seen that the Schools Bill will not progress in its current form. The Education Secretary has said that a number of elements would be prioritised by government in terms of the legislative programme for the remainder of this Parliament. This may include the proposal for a register of children not in school but we'll see.

Warwickshire Council is keen to develop an Education Strategy for 2024 onwards and will continue this work, engaging with schools and settings through 2023.

A message from Nigel Minns, Strategic Director, People Group

Dear Colleagues

I am contacting you to let you know that Johhny Kyriacou has been appointed as the permanent AD for Education. Johnny will be joining us on 1st March 2023.

My thanks to Chris Baird who will remain with us until the end of March to enable a smooth handover.

Best wishes

Nigel

Exclusions

Warwickshire County Council have been working in partnership with The University of Warwick, Bailey Wright and Co Solicitors and Warwickshire Parent Carer Voice to create a resource families can use to better understand the law and their rights. The resource can be accessed via this link  and  has been created to help parents, guardians and carers to understand what school exclusions are, how to prevent them through early intervention and what to expect.

Best wishes

Chris Baird

Interim Assistant Director for Education Services.
