Celebrating Warwickshire’s Family of Schools

WCC Ukraine Response Information for schools re: Ukrainian Children and Young People requests for school places

Lots of schools are dealing with requests for school placements for children and young people arriving from Ukraine. We thank you all in advance for you compassion and understanding. It is hoped this will summarise initial thoughts and questions regarding their arrival.

We are using the same tried and tested system that we used last year for our Afghan settlement programme. It worked successfully and was based on centralising communication and funding. This enabled more schools to access the funding they needed to support children and young people.

  • EMTAS – Schools should contact EMTAS for support as they normally do. EMTAS should then invoice the budget holder for reimbursement.
  • FSM – Schools should offer Free School Meals to children and then claim back from us. We are assuming that most families will be eligible. Please could schools ensure meals are provided from day one. Schools should then send invoices to schoolimprovement@warwickshire.gov.uk and we will forward them on for payment at the usual rate. When guest families have had their paperwork processed, they will be eligible to apply in the same way as UK residents.
  • TRIPS – Schools in first instance should look to use their own internal funds/PTA initially. However, please do contact us with specific requests such as residentials etc.
  • OUT OF YEAR CHILDREN – Children with EAL should not be educated out of their year group
  • TRAUMA SUPPORT – We are proud of how Warwickshire schools are equipped to support children who have experienced trauma and those who have had very challenging starts in life. Many schools are trained in Nurture and the Thrive approach to name but two. It would be entirely appropriate for schools to use similar approaches with their Ukrainian arrivals. If more specific and bespoke support is needed, then schools would raise this with EMTAS who can than pass on to the Education Cell for commissioning if appropriate.
  • UNIFORM – As part of Afghan re-settlement work schools often had spare uniform or were able to use 2nd hand unform. If schools do not have uniform, they can invoice for funding. Again – this can come to schoolimprovement@warwickshire.gov.uk

If you have any further queries please contact ukraine@warwickshire.gov.uk or please call Kerry Brabazon on the Education Corona Line.

Working together to improve attendance.

Guidance to help schools, academy trusts, governing bodies, and local authorities maintain high levels of school attendance including roles and responsibilities

From September 2022, this will replace all previous guidance on school attendance except for statutory guidance for parental responsibility measures.  The Secretary of State has committed to it becoming statutory when parliamentary time allows (this will be no sooner than September 2023).

This week the DfE started a series of LA training webinars.  The following changes were highlighted:

The Big Changes
1.Clarity of expectation: schools, trusts and local authorities will all have clearly defined statutory roles for the first time, set out in a clear table of responsibilities
2.Earlier intervention: Schools will have legal responsibilities to proactively improve attendance for the first time (beyond existing requirements to record accurately) underpinned by timelier sharing of attendance data
3.Support first: All pupils and parents no matter where they live in the country will have clear expectations from their school, be informed about their child’s attendance and have access to early intervention and support first before any legal action if it becomes problematic
4.Targeted whole family support: Attendance teams in LAs will work in tandem with early help to provide a whole-family response with a single assessment, plan and lead practitioner
5.Independent schoolsdata will be collected for the first time, and will receive the same support from LAs (which currently happens in some LAs but not others)

Data Sharing

The DfE attendance data trial continues and we are being asked to encourage all schools to sign up.  Once the trial ends, there will be a requirement to share data using this system.  Further details can be found at the following link:

If you are in the process of changing your MIS or have plans to and have any questions, then please contact us.  We will arrange a call back to discuss this in more detail from our ICT team.

Join a Schools White Paper: Opportunity for all webinar

The Schools White Paper: Opportunity for all: strong schools with great teachers for your child was published on 28 March 2022. The white paper demonstrates how our education system can deliver on the government’s priority to level up across the country. The economic benefits of meeting the white paper’s ambitions, and the case for a fully trust led system, are also set out.

These webinars are open to local authority maintained schools and provide the opportunity to hear more from your Regional Schools Commissioner about the white paper and what it could mean for you.

Thrive at Work

We want to congratulate Park Hill Thorns Federation who have achieved their Bronze level Thrive at work award this week!

Rebecca Harrison, School Business Manager, said: At Park Hill Junior School and Thorns Community Infant School, we want to make sure we are supporting all of our staff with their well-being. We've done this through the Employee Assistance Programme offered through the HR service and we've achieved the Fair Workload Charter. When we saw the Thrive Programme offered further support for staff and recognition for the school, we felt that this would be something we would be interested in.

The Thrive Programme has helped bring the schools together by offering workplace challenges such as "the million step challenge" in October, arranging for Flu jabs for the whole Federation, Dry January and signposting staff to different organisations to support people's well-being such as walking clubs, fitness groups and financial support.
Throughout the process, we had a lot of support and encouragement from the Thrive team. We've met regularly to talk through the ideas, how to complete the processes and get hints and tips on how to achieve certain actions.

If you are considering working towards the Thrive accreditation, I would have to say that you need time and commitment. I'm very fortunate that the role I have within the school means that I can attend some of the training during the school hours which other staff would not have been able to. These meetings have all taken place online, so no travelling is required, but time is needed.

The award has helped to highlight policies that the Local Authority shares with the school such as staff absence including the return to work interviews, equality and diversity and wellbeing.

We've recently had Ofsted visit the two schools and were able to demonstrate the support that we are offering all of our staff through our Wellbeing board and our governor minutes.”

To find out what support is available and how you can get started please contact Jenny Duggan, Thrive at work Lead for Coventry & Warwickshire at jenny.duggan@coventry.gov.uk.  Or check out the website www.wmca.org.uk/thriveatwork

Have your say on a new joint approach to suicide prevention across Coventry and Warwickshire

Every life lost to a suicide is a life lost too soon.

Coventry and Warwickshire’s Suicide Prevention Partnership is inviting people to take part in a survey to help shape a refreshed approach to suicide prevention across the region.

On behalf of the Coventry and Warwickshire Suicide Prevention Partnership, Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council are seeking people’s views on a new joint strategy that will provide information, services and support across the area to help prevent suicide. The new strategy will outline how the Councils will work with other local organisations and services to achieve the vision that no one in Coventry and Warwickshire should ever feel that suicide is their only option.

People are being asked to share their thoughts on the strategy and how it applies to them, whether through their work or personal life experience. The three key areas the survey is seeking feedback on are:

  • the ambitions and priorities identified for the strategy

  • the mental health and wellbeing needs of individuals and their communities

  • how and where people look for support if they need it

The survey is anonymous, confidential and open to everyone. You can provide your feedback by completing the survey here.

The survey closes on 10 July 2022. If you need the survey in an alternative format, please email your name and address to phadmin@warwickshire.gov.uk or call 01926 731484.

If you are struggling to cope right now and need to talk to someone, free support is available 24/7.

  • immediate risk to life: call 999 or go straight to A&E

  • urgent advice: call 111

  • confidential emotional support for residents across Coventry and Warwickshire: call 0800 616171

For further information and advice about suicide prevention and support available, please visit www.dearlife.org.uk.

As part of the Platinum Jubilee festivities, the BBC and The Reading Agency are celebrating seventy great books from across the Commonwealth, known as The Big Jubilee Read. Activity packed programme at Warwickshire’s Country Parks this summer half-term holiday

Children are preparing for an action-packed summer half-term holiday, as events and activities at Warwickshire County Council’s Country Parks are well and truly back on track, after two years of ups-and-downs resulting from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Throughout the school holidays (28 May to 5 June) there will be a huge choice of fun activities for children of all ages at Country Parks across Warwickshire. There’s an opportunity to explore the county’s fantastic green spaces by taking part in our Whitson Holiday Trail, as well as a chance to learn about Britain’s rich royal history through our Jubilee Trail.

If you fancy getting your hands dirty whilst learning about what lurks beneath the water in a pond, then pond dipping at Ryton Pools Country Park on Monday 30 May might be for you. If you’d like to learn how to build a woodland den, followed by toasted marshmallows by the fire, then Kingsbury Water Park on 31 May is the place to be.

On Wednesday 1 June at Ryton Pools, rangers will take children on a minibeast hunting adventure in the woods and meadows, using sweep nets, magnifiers and shaker sheets, to identify all manner of beautiful jumping, flying and crawling creatures found in the long grass, trees and bushes.

Also on 1 June, children can try their hand at fishing, learning the basics of good angling with all tackle, bait and tuition provided. Run in conjunction with the Leamington Angling Association, these Ryton Young Anglers sessions are suitable for beginners or those with a little experience.

More information about each of these activities, and more, can be found on the Country Parks Facebook pages. Some events require booking, which can be done via the Warwickshire Country Parks Eventbrite page.
