Supporting Inclusion for SEND and Vulnerable Groups

Integrated Disability Service 0-5 referral form has moved online

The Single Point of Access (SPA) referral form for requesting pre-school support from Warwickshire County Council’s Integrated Disability Service (IDS) has moved online.

It has been developed as part of a wider project looking to expand and improve access to early intervention in the early years for children with severe and complex long-term needs.

The new electronic single point of access (e-SPA) form will speed up the referral process when requesting support for children aged 0-5 years to access one of the following IDS services:

  • Birth to 3 home learning and portage

  • SEND childcare for children accessing childcare including childminders

  • Specialist teachers for children accessing nursery and transitioning into school

Anyone making a referral will now need to use the e-SPA form, available online on the Local Offer.

Providing information in this way, instead of using the current paper form, will enable more accurate and consistent capturing of information, therefore reducing the chance of duplication or errors during the process. This will allow IDS to process referrals much more quickly and efficiently, meaning that the most appropriate support can be put in place for pre-school children sooner.

The form will also provide an immediate response to the person making the referral to let them know if the child does not meet the criteria for support and will signpost to alternative services wherever possible.

After completing the e-SPA form, the referrer will be able to print a copy for their records and will receive a confirmation email when this has been submitted successfully.

We would suggest gathering all the information needed to complete the form before starting as there is no option to save and come back to it later. It is also recommended that the person making the referral gets a parental signature to confirm the referral has been seen and agreed by parents or carers.

Over the coming months the paper-SPA (which you will find in your Early Years SEND ‘Green File’) will be phased out. We would therefore encourage anyone making a new referral to use the new e-SPA form (you will find the link at the bottom of the IDS page).

Ice safety message and resource from Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service

Following the tragic incident in Solihull where four children fell through ice on a lake, and reports of young people seen playing on ice in Warwickshire since, Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service (WFRS) would like to reiterate some key safety messages for spending time near water in icy conditions.

This article - https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/news/article/3661/help-us-to-protect-you-and-your-loved-ones - shares our plea to all to stay away from frozen water and talk to children and young people about the risks.

In addition, this resource from the RLSS - https://bit.ly/rlss-ice-safety - can be used to help educate children about the dangers associated with icy water, an essential part of keeping them safe.

We hope you find this information useful. For further support from our service with educating children and young people about water and fire safety, please contact Sara Beirne (sarabeirne@warwickshire.gov.uk) or Rebecca Roberts (rebeccaroberts@warwickshire.gov.uk) on 02476 314376.

ICYMI – Energy Efficiency in Schools

On 6 December, the Department for Education announced that schools and colleges in England will be allocated a share of £500million to spend on energy efficiency upgrades. There’s a good few details missing from the announcement, including how the funding will be allocated, the arrangements for payment or monitoring of spend, but it suggests that on average primary schools will receive £16,000 and secondary schools £42,000.

The intention is to help schools to save on bills during the winter months and also to improve energy efficiency by investing in improvements such as installing better heating controls, insulation to reduce heat loss, or switching to energy efficient lighting. We’ll share more information when it’s available.

Championing Employability

Opening doors to a career in construction

A large construction site in Warwickshire has welcomed college students for the national launch of Open Doors 2023, an initiative aimed at giving young people an insight into the industry.

HS2 Ltd hosted Build UK on a busy construction site in Warwickshire for the national launch of Open Doors 2023, which takes young people and those looking for a change of career behind the site hoardings to experience construction first-hand.

The launch was held at HS2’s Long Itchington Wood Tunnel north portal site near Leamington Spa and was attended by over 25 young people from Walsall and Warwickshire Colleges.

The site is managed by HS2’s contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) and is where the tunnel boring machine – Dorothy – is being prepared to begin the second bore of the one-mile twin bore tunnel under woodland.

HS2 has partnered with Build UK – the leading representative organisation for the UK construction industry - to offer a number of construction sites for next year’s Open Doors event, which will run across the country from Monday 13 - Saturday 18 March 2023.

A wide range of organisations will be taking part, offering site visits across the UK, with projects ranging from tunnels to skyscrapers, as well as offices, factories and other facilities to demonstrate the off-site roles across the sector.

At the launch, the young people heard about the massive tunnelling operation currently taking place on the site. They also learned about the types of careers available on HS2, which is currently supporting nearly 30,000 jobs, including over 950 apprentices.

Warwickshire County Council is collaborating with HS2 Ltd to identify and promote future employment opportunities for young people in the area.

During the week-long programme of events next March, visitors will get a unique insight into a career in construction by going behind the site hoardings to experience the fantastic range of opportunities available in construction. In addition to familiar site-based construction roles, many of the positions available are based externally, with companies requiring a back-office support network, front-of-house sales teams, and cutting-edge technical roles.

With the construction industry needing to recruit over 53,000 new entrants every year for the next five years to maintain output, attracting young people to consider a career in the sector is essential. The event aims to challenge perceptions and encourage young people and those looking for a change of career to consider construction, Open Doors highlights the diverse range of opportunities available, including thousands of apprenticeship places.

Over 10 sites are already registered and available for visitors to explore throughout Open Doors Week. New sites will continue to be added until the end of February and will be available to book via the Open Doors website.

Organisations interested in opening a site to the public can email info@opendoors.construction to find out more.

Groups and individuals interested in visiting a site can book from 9 January 2023, but large groups should make contact early through the website.
