Pupils’ special diets catered for by Educaterers

While children’s diets can be controlled at home, once they start school parents and carers may be concerned that they will be exposed to allergens or will not have their specific dietary requirements, which may be the result of a health condition, adequately catered for.

Warwickshire school caterers, Educaterers, work with pupils, parents, carers and professionals to develop menus that can meet the needs of every child.

Food allergies now affect around 7% of children in the UK. There has been a notable rise in allergies in recent years and Educaterers take allergen awareness and protection very seriously.

The school caterers are happy to provide menu advice and support for pupils with medically diagnosed allergens and food intolerances.

All Educaterers kitchen staff receive allergen awareness training and operate a very robust system to ensure each meal ordered is safely delivered to meet individual pupils’ needs.

A designated ‘Purple Process’ identifies children with allergies and special dietary requirements in the infant, junior and primary schools that they serve.

Educaterers work in partnership with NHS Dietetics teams across the region to support customers with special dietary requirements. They already have several specially designed menus that take account of various dietary needs for specific medical conditions (e.g. a pupil with Cystic Fibrosis) and food exclusions where there is one or multiple allergies present (e.g. dairy and egg).

Parents and carers should contact their child’s medical practitioner or dietician in the first instance to get a confirmed special dietary need or allergy diagnosis and then speak to the school, who can inform Educaterers.
