COVID-19 update for our communities

On March 8 guidance is changing which allows pupils to return to face-to-face learning and wrap-around childcare to return. As we begin on the roadmap out of lockdown, guidance will continue to move and change as long as the 4 tests are met:

  • Effective rollout of the vaccine programme
  • Evidence shows vaccines are effective in reducing hospitalisation and deaths in those vaccinated
  • Infection rates do not surge in hospitals
  • Review and variants of concern

To help us move along the roadmap it’s vital that we all continue to follow the latest guidance and follow social distancing guidelines. As key to our local communities, can you please share information in your school newsletters? Below is drafted content that you can use and share. Your support is appreciated.

Newsletter article

We begin our first steps to move out of lockdown on Monday 8 March with the return of face-to-face learning and wrap around care for school children. This is great news, but this does not mean that we should become complacent. To help us move along the stages of the roadmap and for restrictions to continue to ease then we must continue to follow the guidance to prevent and reduce transmission of COVID-19.

Key guidance we need to follow:

  • Hands – regularly wash or sanitise your hands
  • Face – wear a face covering, if you can
  • Space – keep at least 2 metres distance from others
  • Testing – regular testing to help identify COVID-19 within our communities.

Regular testing and vaccinations are also key to coming out of lockdown.

We’d like to remind you that if you have been invited to a vaccine appointment to please book and attend. Creating immunity within our communities will help to reduce the spread of the virus and protect our most vulnerable residents.

Testing will help to identify those who have COVID-19 so they can self-isolate and share their contacts, further reducing the spread of COVID-19. There are two types of tests available:

  1. Testing for people who DO have symptoms

NHS testing is available for people who DO have symptoms of COVID, high temperature, continuous cough and changes to smell and taste.

You can book a testing slot at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or call 119

  1. Testing for people who DO NOT have symptoms

Community testing is available for people who do not have any COVID-19 symptoms. People               who are still attending workplaces or are in contact with other people are encouraged to               regularly get a test but please do not attend if you have any symptoms.

You can book a testing slot at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/covidcommunitytesting

Testing of school age children

To further control the virus, additional no symptom testing is available for all school age children and members of their households or support bubble. For more information visit: www.gov.uk/guidance/rapid-lateral-flow-testing-for-households-and-bubbles-of-school-pupils-and-staff

Your hard work has helped us to reduce COVID-19 within our communities. Let’s keep it up and keep each other safe.

Rapid Testing for Secondary Schools and Colleges in March 2021

Please find here a document which provides an overview of the testing journey for secondary schools and colleges from March 2021 onwards.

Warwickshire schools asked to name HS2’s Long Itchington Wood Tunnel Boring Machine

HS2 tunnelHS2 Ltd have launched a competition for local residents and schools to help find a name for the tunnel boring machine that will start excavating under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire this summer.

North Leamington School, Warwickshire College Group, The Coleshill School and Long Itchington Scout Group have already signed up to take part, and will also benefit from a new skills programme aimed at introducing young people to careers in engineering, through virtual education sessions run by HS2 Ltd and HS2’s contractor BBV Joint Venture (Balfour Beatty Group and VINCI Construction).

Following tradition, tunnel boring machines are always named after women, and HS2 is asking people in the county to help choose a name based on their female role models – whether famous people or unsung heroines. Suggestions will be shortlisted in May and three finalists put to a national public vote, before a winner is announced in the summer.

The 2,000 tonne tunnel boring machine will be operated by BBV and will create a one-mile twin bore tunnel under Long Itchington Wood. It will take five months to dig the first bore of the tunnel, and then it will be extracted at the south portal before being transported by road back to the north portal to commence the second bore.

The tunnel will preserve the ancient woodland in this location, and the final section will form a ‘green tunnel’ - also known as a cut and cover tunnel - where a roof above will return the land to the natural landscape. Around 170 engineers are working on the TBM during its construction and assembly, and a team will then work around the clock excavating the one-mile tunnel. This TBM, along with those soon to start digging under the Chilterns and, a little later in the year, underneath London, is a key element of HS2’s role in the Government’s commitment to Build Back Better.

Cllr Jeff Clarke, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Planning, said:

“This initiative from HS2 is a great way to engage and involve the engineers of the future in this landmark project. It is fitting that Warwickshire has been given the opportunity to help name the machine and honour someone past or present on behalf of the county.

“One of our suggestions for the shortlist is the novelist George Eliot, a famous daughter of the county whose life and works have inspired so many people. George is from Nuneaton and we believe this helps to symbolise that all of Warwickshire - not just the places directly impacted by HS2 - can get some benefit from the construction of the railway, whether that is through employment or as part of the supply chain.

“We hope this competition will encourage young people across the county to take a greater interest in the project.”

HS2’s Construction Director David Bennett said:

“We’re excited to be launching the hunt for a name for the Long Itchington Wood tunnel boring machine and encourage local people to get involved in this impressive feat of engineering, which represents a key milestone for the project in the Midlands. It’s great that local schools will be taking part, and through our skills programme young people will also have the opportunity to learn more about careers in engineering.

“They will also learn about our environmental programme which forms a key part of our work in Warwickshire, with the tunnel designed to preserve the ancient woodland, and material from the tunnel being recycled and re-used. We’ve already planted 80,000 trees in the Midlands, with an additional 47,000 planted this winter in Warwickshire as part of our green corridor programme that will deliver new woodlands, wildlife habitats and green spaces for people to enjoy.”

This is the third HS2 tunnel boring machine to be named by public vote. The first two machines, which are due to start creating the tunnel under the Chilterns, were named after famous local Buckinghamshire women: Florence Nightingale - the founder of modern nursing who spent many years living in Buckinghamshire; and pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, who was born in Buckinghamshire.

HS2 has launched an online portal for Warwickshire residents to submit their chosen names. They are encouraged to choose people who have an association with Warwickshire and may include, for example, actresses, artists, scientists, engineers, authors, athletes and musicians. Names may also include the unsung heroines of Warwickshire, including individuals who deserve recognition for their contributions to the local community.

The competition portal will remain open until the end of April, and a final shortlist of nominations will be selected and put to a public vote in May. The winner will be revealed during the launch of the Long Itchington Wood tunnel boring machine this summer.

People can submit names on the online competition portal here: https://www.hs2.org.uk/long-itchington-tunnel/

Secondary Admissions National offer day

This week saw National offer day for all children due to transfer to secondary school in September 2021 on Monday 1st March 2021.

This year Warwickshire School Admissions Service received a total of 6352 applications from Warwickshire families, out of a total of 8398 applications processed by the team. Families may apply to any secondary school and Warwickshire schools are popular with families living outside of the county.

Parents were encouraged to apply online via the County Councils website and 6170 applications were made using this facility, this equated to 97% of all applications received this year. All parents that applied this way can view their child’s offer online from Monday 1st March and all other parents will receive an offer letter in the post.

The national closing date was applications is 31st October 2020 and any applications received after this time will not receive an offer on national offer day. All Warwickshire children that applied on time have been offered a secondary school place for September 2021.

4999 Warwickshire children have been offered a place at their preferred secondary school for September 2021. This equates to over 78% of Warwickshire families that applied on time receiving their first choice of secondary school.

Looking at all the applications received from Warwickshire families by the closing date, this increases to 93.3% of applications or 5943 children receiving an offer for one of their top three choice secondary schools.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to meet every family’s preference and for 2021 entry 243 children have not been offered a school of their choosing. This equates to 3.9% of all applications received on time and all of these children have been offered a place at a local Warwickshire secondary school.

Grammar School offers

Offers for Warwickshire Grammar schools are made alongside all other Secondary schools on national offer day.

Due to COVID and in line with Central Government guidance, the 11+ testing for 2021 entry took place after the national closing date to apply for a school place. Results of the test were sent to parents in mid-December 2020.

To compensate Warwickshire families for the delay in receiving 11+ results, all parents were able to make an additional 7th preference for a secondary school place for this year only. Parents of children sitting the 11+ test were clearly advised to include their preferred grammar school alongside any other secondary schools and submit their applications prior to the closing date on 31st October 2020.

After an offer is received

Once the offer has been made Warwickshire parents are required to confirm whether they accept or decline their child’s secondary school offer. Acceptances can be submitted online for those families that originally applied via the website.

Parents wishing to decline the offer will be advised to contact the Admissions Service to formally decline the offer and to confirm their child’s alternative education provider. No places will be recorded as declined without knowledge of the child’s future school destination as it is not always possible to accept that place again later should the family change their mind.

Any families who have yet to make an application have been sent multiple correspondence and will be written to again advising them of the process to apply and will be encouraged to make their application through the online facility. Primary and Junior schools will also be asked to confirm the destinations of their current year 6 children for September 2021 and signpost any families that have not applied to the Admissions Team to discuss their options.

Any late applications or changes to existing applications received by the 10th March will be considered for the first reallocation which begins from 15th March 2021.

The Admission Team are available to answer phone calls and emails and provide support to families where needed.

Waiting Lists and Reallocation Rounds

For this year of entry, Warwickshire Admissions Service will be operating specified reallocation rounds as part of the re-offer process. Any late applications will be considered and offered a school place as part of this process.

The first reallocation round will commence from Monday 15th March 2021, with re-offers from the waiting lists made over the next 2 weeks. During this time the waiting lists will be frozen and re-offers will be made to fill any places which have become available since 1st March.

In order to be considered in the first reallocation round, the Admissions Service must have received a late or amended application by no later than Wednesday 10th March 2021.

A second reallocation round will then commence from 26th April 2021. If there are any further re-offers to make after this time, then applicants will be considered as and when vacancies become available.

Updated Attendance Guidance

The DfE issued updated school attendance guidance on 2 March 2021.  A link to a new set of sub-codes and clarifying information in the data collection section has been added.  The main guidance remains the same.

Sub-Codes

The sub-codes relate to COVID-19 absence and are optional but can be used to support the DfE data submission. As the subcodes have been issued by the DfE, they will not impact on census data unlike the previous codes 7, 8 and 9.

Capita SIMS

Patch 26311 will be automatically deployed to Primary/Nursery/Infant and Junior schools. Secondary schools will be able to deploy these patches via Solus.  Once patch 26311 is installed, schools will be able to use the new sub codes.

If you have any questions on how to access the patch, please contact your ICT support.

Other Management Information Systems

Schools may wish to contact their provider to establish how their MIS system will be updated.

Data Collection

This year the census will collect attendance codes in addition to absence codes.

Message from Warwickshire School Admissions Service

On the 1 March secondary school offers were made to children due to start secondary school in September 2021. Whilst many children will be happy with the offers they have received, we are mindful of the small number of children whose parents or carer have not yet applied for a place. To ensure we do everything we can to secure a school place for all children due to commence secondary school in September, we ask you please to remind all parents and carers of children in year 6 that they should apply for a school place through Warwickshire CC Admissions service, or alternatively confirm inform the Admissions Service of any alternative plans that have been made for the provision of a child's secondary education.
