Deaf Awareness Week 2nd -8th May
Deaf Awareness Week aims to bring to light the barriers that people who are Deaf and those with hearing loss face in society. By educating ourselves on learning key communication tips and recognising the importance of the Deaf Community, together we can take steps to be more inclusive and celebrate diversity. There are lots of ways that both children and adults can celebrate Deaf Awareness Week this year.
Here are some top ideas to get you started:
- Learn directly from the Deaf Community about their lived experiences. The National Deaf society has created a video which shows what deaf children love about being deaf, what being deaf means to them, and what might surprise people about being deaf.
- Watch and learn some stories and games, using sign language. Can you copy the signs? Click here for BSL stories to watch.
- Support children to develop their signing skills through learning some key British Sign Language signs. BSL Click here for BSL signs poster
- Fundraise for charities that support people who are Deaf and those with hearing loss.
- Help children to learn tips and advice on how to communicate with others
- The National Deaf Society also offers free resources and inspiring stories to help you celebrate Deaf Awareness Week (1 to 7 May 2023) and promote awareness. These can be found here
