Come and join the big conversation

Join the big conversation to help tackle childhood obesity

Following a successful pilot last autumn, Women & Theatre is delivering its theatre-based workshop over Zoom later this month.

Developed from research, this interactive, online workshop focusses on why conversations with families about early childhood obesity are regarded by many as being "difficult" to have.

It uses creative methods and discussion to encourage us to become more confident and comfortable approaching these conversations. (Please note participants do not take part in role-plays).

The pilot participants reported feeling more confident & comfortable about initiating conversations with families using a strengths-based approach.

The workshop lasts 2.5 hours (with breaks) & there are 4 dates to choose from:

Thursday 25 March: 2 - 4.30pm

Friday 26 March: 10-12.30pm

Saturday 27 March: 10-12.30pm

Mon 29 March:  2 - 4.30pm

Child exploitation is happening in Warwickshire: new website launching during Child Exploitation Awareness Week to highlight issue

Do you know what child exploitation is?

Child exploitation is when an abuser takes advantage of a young person under the age of 18 for their own personal gain. This can take many forms, including sexual exploitation or encouraging or coercing the child to commit crime. It often comes with the promise of something they desire as a reward and without knowing they are being exploited.

Did you know child exploitation is happening in Warwickshire?

Hundreds of children and young people are victims of child exploitation every year in Warwickshire.

We all have a responsibility to spot the signs and report it.

Next week Warwickshire County Council will be supporting national Child Exploitation Awareness Day (18 March) to highlight the different types of child exploitation and what signs to look for in children and young people who may be being exploited.

Throughout next week (WC 15th March) awareness messages will be shared across social media to raise awareness of child exploitation and to support the launch of the new ‘Something’s Not Right’ website, which has been a collaboration between Warwickshire Police, Warwickshire County Council, Barnardo’s and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Warwickshire.

This new website is packed full of useful information and resources for children and young people, parents, teachers, and people in the community such as licensees and professionals to equip everyone in Warwickshire with an understanding of child exploitation, how to spot the signs and who to speak to if something’s not right.

The aim of supporting Child Exploitation Awareness Day and the launch of the new website is to highlight the issues surrounding CE; encouraging everyone to think, spot and speak out against abuse. Please support the launch of the new website next week and beyond by sharing our social media messages across Facebook and Twitter and take time to recognise the signs of abuse.

We have promotional material that we would encourage anyone from any school to make use of across social media to strike up conversations with others, including associates in other organisations or clubs, friends or family, to help raise the profile of child exploitation so it can be more widely recognised and tackled.

To find out  more about child exploitation, how to spot the signs and information for professionals, parents and the general public, you can view the new child exploitation website at www.somethingsnotright.co.uk

To download the toolkit and access the social media graphics and messages, click here. Don’t forget to use #WarwickshireCE across your social media posts so we can share them!

If you would like to find out more about CE training available for professionals and the community, please contact Rebecca Weaver, Advanced CSE Practitioner for Barnardo’s within the Warwickshire Exploitation, Missing and Trafficking Team: rebecca.weaver@barnardos.org.uk

Thank you for your support.

Have your say on mental health and wellbeing services

Residents are being asked for their thoughts on mental health services as part of an online survey conducted by Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council. The aim of this is to understand the needs of the Coventry and Warwickshire adult populations, analyse current and future health and wellbeing needs of the local population and to inform the commissioning of health, wellbeing and social care services.

This survey is a chance for people to share their experiences of mental wellbeing and the services they have used or referred someone into.  This includes understanding any impact that the Covid-19 pandemic may have had.

The findings will inform the Coventry and Warwickshire Mental Health and Wellbeing Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) which in turn will be used to inform commissioning plans, Health and Wellbeing Strategies and local transformation plans. The survey closes on 26th March 2021. To have your say, click here.

Opportunity for free whole school coaching training: School Genie pilot summary and details of webinar

As leaders, you have multiple demands on your time and skills. Few schools have a specialist on hand to help them build the social capital in their
staff body so that all can truly flourish.

In your school you may have someone with the latent skills and disposition to become a school Genie - someone who can be trained in the art of seeing and
being, catalysing trust and coaching so that your staff can thrive.

The Schoolgenie Programme provides 7 days of training throughout the year - a combination of weekdays and weekends - and is an empowering and transformational journey for your Genie or Genies.

Find out more at a bespoke webinar on 24th March at 5pm or 25th March at 8pm. Just email info@schoolgenie.co.uk to sign up for either event.

Advice for NQTs and NQT tutors for Induction 2020 – 2021

We are coming towards the end of the spring term and the need for NQTs to have their next assessment. This particular cohort of NQTs have had a double blow in terms of continuity for their career. They experienced a disrupted final assessment in gaining their QTS and now have had a second disruption due to the tier and national lockdowns.

The TRA have not issued any further advice for NQT induction this year. We are therefore reminding NQTs and tutors of the options available to them with regard to the assessment to be made at the end of the spring term. Any decisions should be made jointly with the NQT and the school:

  • For NQTs who have had the opportunity to continue to build evidence towards meeting the teaching standards in their particular setting, who are progressing well towards meeting the standards at the end of their induction, the option to be assessed at the end of the spring term, as usual is open to them.
  • For NQTs who have not had a fair opportunity to demonstrate that they are meeting the teaching standards and who are not on track to meet the teaching standards at the end of their induction, it may be possible to pause their induction for the spring term. Please contact Debbie Hibberd (07932 007324 debbiehibberd@warwickshire.gov.uk) to discuss the options for the NQT and the school in these circumstances.
  • There are a range of options open to schools and NQTs, in discussion with the Appropriate Body, including:

             - pausing induction and re-starting it in the summer term, so the final assessment is made at the end of the autumn term

             - continuing with induction and if required, offering an extension to the induction year, either in the same school or a portable extension that can be carried forward to a new teaching job in either the same Appropriate Body or another Appropriate Body

             - bespoke arrangements that fit the circumstances of the individual case.
